Subject ‘verb word’ / ‘should + verb word'
(After subject, '2nd form of verb'
is not used in these types of
sentences)
(In case of negative sentences:
After subject, use ‘not' + 'verb word’.
Do not use 'Do / Does / Did' before
‘not’ )
Examples
I
demand (that) you show / should show
yourself at once.
Opposition
demanded (that) the government impose /
should impose stringent law.
Court
directed (that) he undergo / should undergo
narco test.
She had
insisted (that) he travel / should travel
to Switzerland.
She sat on the sofa
intending (that) he sit / should sit
beside her but to her disappointment, he sat opposite.
He
prays (that) the lord give / should give
him strength.
They
preferred (that) he speak / should speak
on their behalf.
He would
propose (that) the police take / should
take custody of the valuable while
they investigated the contradictory claims.
The committee
recommended (that) the police investigate
/ should investigate the case.
She
suggested (that) he eat / should eat
this food.
I
suggest (that) you not speak / should not speak
unless spoken to.
(each of the above sentences has same
meaning irrespective of whether you use
'verb word' or 'should + verb word',
after subject
(Similarly for following sentences)

(After
‘ensure that subject’ use
‘2nd form of verb’ / verb word)
(DO/DOES form with plural / singular
subject, if present tense is used
after ‘ensure that subject’)
(In case of negative sentences:
After
‘ensure that subject’, use
'do not / does not / did not')
(After subject, should is never used)
Examples
I shall personally
ensure that he paid / pays
for what he has done to you.
I take care to
ensure that I kept / keep
much cleaner.
His only concern had been to make
sure that something did / does not happen
to her.
Ensure that situation didn’t / doesn’t
aggravate.
You would have to make
sure bird was / is fed & watered
regularly or it would die.
Ensure that material was / is not aired.

‘until subject’, use
'do not / does not / did not'
(Between 'unless / until' & subject, that
is not used)
(After subject, should is never used)
(Even past perfect may be used after
‘until subject’)
Examples
I am going to leave you
unless you promised / promise
to cease all contacts with them.
She said she would tell to police
unless he owned up / owns up.
Perpetrators will sell her photos
unless she stumped up / stumps up
1 million dollars.
Until his subordinate betrayed / betrays
the fact that he couldn’t be
trusted, he ought to be given the benefit of doubt.
I ought not to make the attempt to meet
them until I first became / had
first become master of their
language.
She was determined to work
until she had found out / found out
