(I had come to know about Dominique Moceanu first time some days before Atlanta Olympics when I had seen her image and had read her name in a hindi newspaper. At that moment she had become my favourite celebrity. Then some days later, I had watched her on television during Olympics.)

DEEP SKY OBJECT

Eagle Nebula (M16)

There is a famous Hubble image of a section of Eagle Nebula (M16), taken in 1995, which shows three giant pillars of hydrogen gas and dust replete with newborn stars inside. Each pillar is about 5 light years long. The image is sometimes called the 'Pillars of Creation'.

(I had seen the image of 'Pillars of Creation' first time in the magazine 'Sky and Telescope' in the library of IRDE and even today, that image is my favourite image of all the images related to deep sky objects and always reminds me of my time in the library of IRDE)

 

SUPERNOVA  
1987A 

In all, about 10⁵⁸ neutrinos were emitted from supernova 1987A in the galaxy Large Magellanic Cloud and total about 10⁵⁹ MeV energy was released in a second or so. At the Earth, about 163000 light years away, the flux of neutrinos (which had passed through the Earth on 23 February 1987) was over 10¹⁰ neutrinos through each square centimeter. About 1% of the total energy emitted appeared in the form of electromagnetic radiation. The remaining energy was in the form of neutrinos.

An intense burst of neutrinos from Supernova 1987A had been detected in multikilotonne water Cerenkov detectors. This was the first experimental evidence that the most of the supernova energy is released in the form of neutrinos. 20 neutrinos from the Supernova 1987A had been detected in Kamiokande and IMB water Cerenkov detectors. 12 neutrinos each having energy greater than 6 MeV had been detected in Kamiokande, whereas 8 neutrinos each having energy greater than 20 MeV had been detected in IMB detector.
